Garfield Foundation
The Garfield Memorial United Methodist Church Foundation was established
in 1980 thanks to some farsighted church members who embraced exceptional
Christian charity and displayed astute financial perspective. It has
supported many important Christian accomplishments, in our community and
around the world.
The Foundation's purpose is to support charitable projects and programs in
which Garfield Church is or may become engaged but which are ordinarily
considered to be outside the normal operating budget of the church.
The Foundation is governed by five trustees. Effective in 1998, three are
elected by the congregation at the Charge Conference. In addition, the
Pastor, plus the chairperson of Garfield's Administrative Board are
automatically Foundation Trustees by virtue of their offices.
The Foundation was initially funded for $1.3 million by the sale of land
that had been purchased by individuals some years earlier for less than
$100,000 and donated to the church. Currently, the majority of the assets
are in the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund and the Vanguard Total Bond Fund.
Dividends and interest from these securities support grants to a wide
range of institutions and projects.
Congregation members and 501C3 charitable organizations that wish to
propose grants for particular purposes should direct their requests to our
pastor.
In addition to recommending worthy causes to The Foundation, Garfield
Church members are encouraged to keep this unique and enduring asset of
our Church functioning and growing in order to continue to help support
the charitable outreaches of Garfield Church. Members and friends of the
congregation are invited to add to The Foundation's resources through
tax-deductible contributions and bequests.
